How Can ABA and Behaviour Modification Therapy Reduce Severe Tantrums at Home?

The screaming starts in the supermarket aisle. Or at six in the evening, when everyone is tired. Maybe it ends with hitting, throwing, a child on the floor and a parent in tears. If that is your home, please hear this first: it is not bad parenting. A tantrum is a message in the wrong language. At Shaping CDC in Hyderabad, we use ABA and behaviour modification therapy to help children find a better one.

Why Does My Child Have Severe Tantrums That Seem to Come From Nowhere?

They almost never come from nowhere. Behind each big tantrum sits a reason, and finding it is half the work. Children with autism, ADHD, speech difficulties or developmental delays often struggle more, because the words they need are not there yet. Hunger, tiredness and sudden change can tip any child over, too.

What your child may be saying What you see What we teach instead
“I do not want this.” Screaming when play stops or homework starts Asking for a break with a word, card or gesture
“Notice me.” Yelling while you are on the phone Tapping your arm and calling “Mum”
“I want that.” Meltdown at the toy shelf Asking, waiting, hearing “first, then”
“It is too much.” Covering ears, falling apart in noisy places A calm space, plus support from our occupational therapists

What Is the Difference Between ABA and Behaviour Modification Therapy?

ABA breaks skills into small steps and uses rewards and structured activities to teach things like communication, sharing and everyday routines. Behaviour modification therapy aims to change unwanted behaviours by rewarding the wanted ones, while looking at what sits underneath. In real homes, the two blend together. Our psychologists mix them to suit your child.

How Does ABA Work Step by Step for Tantrums at Home?

What do we look at first?

We start with a behaviour assessment led by our in-house psychologist. We ask what happened before the tantrum, what it looked like, and what happened straight after. Patterns appear quickly. You may spot them too, once someone shows you where to look.

How do we reduce tantrums without punishment?

We teach and reward. Shouting and scolding rarely teach a child anything new, so our plans focus on skills.

  • Praising and rewarding calm moments straight away
  • Teaching a clear way to ask for help or a break
  • Using “first, then” so changes feel less like a shock
  • Responding the same way every time, whoever is home
  • Keeping everyone safe first, and teaching later when things are calm

What will we ask of parents?

A lot, honestly, but we do not leave you alone with it. Parent training gives you practical steps for morning routines, bedtime and everyday family life. You are the one who is there at 6 pm, so you are the real therapist between sessions.

How Long Does It Take for Therapy to Reduce Tantrums?

It depends on your child. Nobody can promise a fixed date, and we would be wary of anyone who does. We set clear goals for target behaviours with timelines, then track progress using checklists. Small wins often show first, such as shorter tantrums or a child who points instead of screaming. Deeper, long-standing patterns take longer, and that is normal.

When Are Tantrums Serious Enough to Seek Professional Help?

Tantrums are normal in toddlers. How often, how big and how long they last is what counts. Severe tantrums can also be linked to something we can treat, so a proper look is worth it. Please book a visit if you see any of these.

  • Hitting, biting or hurting themselves or others
  • Tantrums many times a day, or for a very long time
  • Outbursts getting bigger instead of smaller
  • Your family avoiding outings, visitors or school

If speech or sensory trouble sits behind the tantrums, our Integrated Development Program brings a psychologist, a speech therapist and an occupational therapist together under one plan.
