The previous edition, DSM-IV, included distinct subtypes such as Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). The use of the term “spectrum” reflects a more inclusive and dimensional understanding of the disorder.
